The moisturizing effect is achieved using low concentrations and is due to an increase in water binding sites in the stratum corneum and a reduction in transepidermal water dispersion. The keratolytic and keratoreducing effect is obtained at higher concentrations (30-50%), and the mechanism appears to be the alteration, through the breaking of hydrogen bonds, of the quaternary structure of the keratin in the stratum corneum.
