Urea is an organic compound which, when used topically, can have, depending on the concentration used, a moisturizing or keratolytic effect. The moisturizing effect is obtained by using low concentrations and is due to an increase in water binding sites in the stratum corneum and a reduction in trans-epidermal water dispersion. The kerato-reducing and keratolytic effect, on the other hand, is obtained at higher concentrations (30-50%) and the mechanism seems to be the alteration, through the breaking of hydrogen bonds, of the quaternary structure of the keratin in the stratum corneum.
