What it is and what it is used for
Gaviscon is a medicine that belongs to the class of drugs used for the treatment of peptic ulcer (a lesion that affects the inner lining of the stomach) and gastroesophageal reflux (a condition that occurs when the acidic contents of the stomach flow back up to the throat, the oesophagus).

Gaviscon is indicated for adults and adolescents (12-18 years) and works by relieving the symptoms of occasional heartburn.

What you need to know before taking the medicine
Do not take Gaviscon
- If you are allergic to sodium alginate or sodium bicarbonate or any of the other ingredients of this medicine (listed in paragraph 6), including methyl parahydroxybenzoate (E218) and propyl parahydroxybenzoate (E216) (parabens).

Warnings and precautions
Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before taking Gaviscon.

In particular, inform your doctor or pharmacist if you:
- suffer, or have suffered in the past, from a kidney disorder that compromises its function (kidney failure).

Do not take the medicine for prolonged treatments. If symptoms continue to appear after 7 days from the start of treatment, consult your doctor.

Children and adolescents
In adolescents (12-18 years), use only if strictly necessary and under strict medical supervision.

Possible side effects
Like all medicines, this medicine can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them.

The side effects are listed below according to their frequency of occurrence:

Very rare (may affect up to 1 in 10,000 people)

- allergic reactions, including severe ones (anaphylactic or anaphylactoid reactions)
- hypersensitivity reactions that may manifest with skin redness accompanied by itching (urticaria)
- difficulty breathing (bronchospasm)
- increased gas formation in the stomach and intestines (flatulence), nausea
- swelling (oedema)
