Glycerol

What it is and what it is used for
Glycerol Alfasigma contains the active ingredient glycerol, which belongs to the category of laxatives, medicines used to facilitate bowel movements.

This medicine is indicated for the short-term treatment of occasional constipation.

Consult your doctor if you do not feel better or if you feel worse after 7 days.

What you need to know before taking the medicine
Do not use Glycerol Alfasigma
- if you are allergic to glycerol or any of the other ingredients of this medicine (listed in section 6)
- if you have acute abdominal pain or any abdominal pain of unknown cause
- if you have nausea or vomiting
- if you have an intestinal obstruction or narrowing (stenosis)
- if you suffer from rectal bleeding of unknown cause
- if you have an acute hemorrhoidal crisis with pain and bleeding
- if you are severely dehydrated

Warnings and precautions
Consult your doctor before using Glycerol Alfasigma:
- if the need for a laxative results from a sudden change in previous bowel habits (frequency and characteristics of bowel movements) that has lasted for more than two weeks or when the use of the laxative does not produce effects
- if you are elderly or in poor health
- if you often have difficulty emptying your bowels or if you suffer from chronic constipation

Please note that:
- laxatives should be used as infrequently as possible and for no more than seven days
- you should drink at least 6-8 glasses of water, or other liquids, during treatment with laxatives to promote softening of the stool
- it is advisable to correct your eating habits by supplementing your diet with more fiber and water during episodes of constipation

The abuse of laxatives (frequent or prolonged use or with excessive doses) can cause:
- persistent diarrhea with consequent loss of water, mineral salts, and other essential substances
- in more severe cases, dehydration or a severe decrease in blood potassium may occur, which can lead to heart, nerve, or muscle dysfunction, especially if you are also taking heart medicines (digitalis), medicines to increase urine production (diuretics), or corticosteroids (anti-inflammatory drugs)
- the need to progressively increase the dosage
- chronic constipation
- loss of normal bowel function (decreased bowel tone)
- abuse of laxatives, especially contact laxatives (stimulant laxatives), can cause dependence (and therefore, a possible need to progressively increase the dosage), chronic constipation, and loss of normal bowel function (intestinal atony)

Children
In children under 12 years of age, the medicine can only be used after consulting a doctor.
