Warnings and precautions
Laxatives should be used as infrequently as possible and for no longer than seven days. Use for longer periods requires a doctor's prescription after adequate evaluation of the individual case.
The treatment of chronic or recurrent constipation always requires the intervention of a doctor for diagnosis, drug prescription and supervision during therapy.
The abuse of laxatives can cause persistent diarrhoea with consequent loss of water, mineral salts (especially potassium) and other essential nutrients. In the most severe cases of abuse, dehydration or hypokalemia may occur, which can lead to cardiac or neuromuscular dysfunctions, especially in cases of concomitant treatment with cardiac glycosides, diuretics or corticosteroids.
The abuse of laxatives, especially contact laxatives (stimulant laxatives), can cause dependence (and, therefore, possible need to progressively increase the dosage), chronic constipation and loss of normal intestinal functions (intestinal atony).
In cases of constipation, it is advisable first of all to correct eating habits by integrating the daily diet with an adequate intake of fibre and water.
When using laxatives, it is advisable to drink at least 6-8 glasses of water, or other liquids, per day, in order to promote the softening of faeces.

Consult your doctor when the need for a laxative arises from a sudden change in previous bowel habits (frequency and characteristics of bowel movements) that has lasted for more than two weeks or when the use of the laxative fails to produce effects.
In children under twelve years of age, the medicine can only be used after consulting a doctor.
It is also advisable for elderly people or those in poor health to consult a doctor before using the medicine.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding
Ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before taking any medicine.
No adequate and well-controlled studies have been conducted on the use of the medicine during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
Although there are no obvious contraindications for the use of the medicine during pregnancy and breastfeeding, it is recommended to take the medicine only if necessary and under medical supervision.

Effects on ability to drive and use machines.
The medicine does not affect the ability to drive or use machines. However, it is possible that side effects may occur during treatment, so it is advisable to know your reaction to the drug before driving or using machines.

Possible side effects
Like all medicines, GLYCEROL can cause side effects, although not everyone experiences them.
The side effects of GLYCEROL are listed below. There is not enough data available to establish the frequency of the individual effects listed.

Gastrointestinal disorders
Isolated cramp-like pain or abdominal colic and diarrhoea, with loss of fluids and electrolytes, more frequent in cases of severe constipation, as well as rectal irritation.

Following the instructions in the package leaflet reduces the risk of side effects. If any of the side effects get serious, or if you notice any side effects not listed in this package leaflet, please tell your doctor or pharmacist.
