Iodine

What it is and what it is used for
This medicine is a solution, also known as iodine tincture, and contains the active ingredient iodine, used as a disinfectant.
IODIO NOVA ARGENTIA is indicated for disinfecting intact skin for occasional treatments.

Consult your doctor if you do not notice any improvement or if you notice a worsening of symptoms after a short period of using the medicine.

What you need to know before taking the medicine
Do not use IODIO NOVA ARGENTIA
- if you are allergic to iodine or any of the other ingredients of this medicine (listed in section 6);
- if you are pregnant (see the Pregnancy and breastfeeding section);
- if the person who needs to use the medicine is a child under 6 months of age.

Warnings and precautions
Consult your doctor or pharmacist before using IODIO NOVA ARGENTIA.

- Use this medicine only for external areas.
- Do not ingest IODIO NOVA ARGENTIA and do not apply it to the eyes or mucous membranes.
- Apply IODIO NOVA ARGENTIA only to intact skin as it can cause irritation and delay the healing of wounds and abrasions.
- Do not cover the affected skin area with non-breathable (occlusive) bandages to avoid excessive absorption of iodine.
- Avoid using this medicine for prolonged periods, as prolonged use can cause sensitization or irritation (caustication) of the treated area. In these cases, stop the treatment and, if necessary, contact your doctor. Furthermore, if you use the medicine for prolonged periods on extensive areas of the body, on mucous membranes or with non-breathable bandages, it is necessary to undergo thyroid function tests. This is especially necessary for children and people with thyroid problems. Iodine can alter thyroid function, so use IODIO NOVA ARGENTIA with caution if you have thyroid problems, if you are over 45 years old, or if you suffer from a condition called goiter (enlargement of the thyroid gland).
- Stop treatment at least 10 days before performing tests with marked iodine.
- IODIO NOVA ARGENTIA may alter the results of some thyroid tests, especially in premature newborns.
- Avoid using essences, iron filings, mercury-containing products, silver or lead salts, alkalis, carbonates, alkaloids and their salts together with this medicine.

Children
This medicine can be used in children only if strictly necessary and under medical supervision.

Possible side effects
Like all medicines, this medicine can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them.

The following side effects may occur:

Frequency unknown (cannot be estimated from the available data):
- Burning or irritation of the skin (acneiform eruptions, iododerma), delayed wound healing, irritation of the mucous membranes (due to iodine inhalation);
- Hypersensitivity reactions including skin irritations (urticaria, angioedema, cutaneous haemorrhages or purpura), fever, joint pain, and blood alterations (lymphadenopathy and eosinophilia);

If iodine is used on the skin as indicated in the package leaflet, it is not absorbed into the blood in large quantities and therefore can cause minimal side effects. However, following the use of this medicine in excessive quantities, for prolonged periods or with non-breathable bandages, the following side effects may occur:

Frequency unknown (cannot be estimated from the available data):
- Thyroid problems (goiter and hypothyroidism, as well as hyperthyroidism or Graves' disease), interference with thyroid tests;
- Depression, insomnia;
- Headache;
- Nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea;
- Impotence;
- Iodism, which consists of the manifestation of a series of side effects caused by prolonged use of iodine: metallic taste, increased salivation, burning and pain in the mouth, common cold (acute rhinitis and coryza-like syndrome), swelling and inflammation of the throat, irritation and swelling of the eyes and increased tearing. Respiratory problems may occur (pulmonary oedema, dyspnoea and bronchitis).

Following the instructions in the package leaflet reduces the risk of side effects.
