What it is and what it is used for
MUCOSTAR contains the active substance carbocisteine.
Carbocisteine belongs to a category of medicines called mucolytics that helps to thin bronchial mucus.
MUCOSTAR is used in acute and chronic respiratory diseases.
What you need to know before taking the medicine
Do not take MUCOSTAR:
- if you are allergic to carbocisteine or any of the other ingredients of this medicine listed in section 6;
- if you suffer from gastrointestinal lesions (gastroduodenal ulcers);
- if you are pregnant or breastfeeding (see "Pregnancy and breastfeeding").
Do not give this medicine to children under 2 years of age.
Warnings and precautions
Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before taking MUCOSTAR.
Caution is recommended in elderly patients, asthmatic patients with a history of severe respiratory problems, debilitated patients, those with a history of gastroduodenal ulcers, or those taking medicines known to cause gastrointestinal bleeding. You must stop treatment with carbocisteine in case of gastrointestinal bleeding.
This medicine should not be used in combination with cough suppressants and/or medicines that inhibit bronchial secretion.
Children
Medicines with mucolytic action such as carbocisteine can cause bronchial obstruction in children under 2 years of age. Therefore, MUCOSTAR should not be used in children under 2 years of age (see "Do not take MUCOSTAR").
Possible side effects
Like all medicines, this medicine can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them.
The following side effects may occur with the intake of MUCOSTAR:
- dizziness and digestive phenomena such as abdominal pain, nausea, diarrhea, gastrointestinal bleeding. In such a case, the dosage should be reduced or therapy discontinued.
- allergic skin rashes (allergic skin reactions), anaphylactic reactions (severe allergic reactions), fixed erythema (redness or irritation of the skin that develops with each administration of a given medicine), irritations and skin diseases (Steven-Johnson syndrome, bullous dermatitis, erythema multiforme, toxic skin rash)
- bronchial obstruction.
In such cases, stop treatment and consult your doctor to initiate appropriate therapy.
