Liquid paraffin
Sella
Lubricating oily laxative
Description
A medical device indicated for occasional constipation, for those who cannot strain to expel fecal matter, and after abdominal surgery to prevent the formation of particularly hard stools that could cause difficulty in defecation with consequent excessive and potentially harmful abdominal straining.
Recommended when softer fecal matter and faster movement through the intestinal loops are needed, or in the presence of diverticula.
Sella liquid paraffin coats fecal matter and creates a lipid film along the intestinal walls, slowing down the physiological absorption of water. The water not absorbed by the intestine helps to soften the stool. In addition, Sella liquid paraffin lubricates the stool, facilitating its passage through the intestine, without irritating the mucosa.
Instructions for use
- From 6 to 11 years: 2-3 teaspoons per day, in a single dose.
- From 12 years: 2-3 tablespoons per day, in a single dose.
Take the product during or after meals, preferably in the evening at least one hour before going to bed.
Components
Vaseline oil.
Warnings
Products with a laxative effect should be used as infrequently as possible and for no more than seven days.
It is not recommended for children under 6 years of age.
A diet rich in liquids promotes the effect of the product.
Keep out of reach and sight of children.
If adverse effects occur, treatment should be discontinued and a doctor should be informed.
Do not use the medical device if, at the time of first opening, the packaging is damaged or not perfectly intact.
Do not use in case of:
- hypersensitivity (allergy) to either component;
- nausea, vomiting, acute abdominal pain or pain of unknown origin;
- intestinal obstruction or stenosis;
- gastrointestinal disorders such as appendicitis, ulcerative colitis, rectal bleeding of unknown origin;
- pregnancy or during breastfeeding;
- acute hemorrhoidal crisis with pain and bleeding;
- severe dehydration;
- individuals with difficulty swallowing or who have pathologies (e.g., hiatal hernia) or conditions (e.g., debilitated bedridden individuals) that entail a risk of regurgitation;
- colostomy/ileostomy;
- concomitant use of other laxatives or stool softeners.
Possible side effects:
Metabolic and nutritional disorders.
Liquid paraffin can interfere with the absorption of fat-soluble substances, such as vitamins A, D, E, K, especially after prolonged use of the product.
Isolated cramping pains or abdominal colic, more frequent in cases of severe constipation.
Rectal paraffin leakage (dribbling, dripping) with consequent anal irritation and itching, rectal bleeding, especially after prolonged use of the product.
Lipoid pneumonia and oil embolism, due to accidental inhalation of the product.
Overdose and abuse:
Abuse of preparations with a laxative effect (frequent or prolonged use or with excessive doses) can cause abdominal pain, persistent diarrhea with consequent loss of water, mineral salts (especially potassium) and other essential nutrients. Fluid and electrolyte losses must be replaced.
Electrolyte imbalances are characterized by the following symptoms: thirst, vomiting, weakness, edema, bone pain (osteomalacia) and hypoalbuminemia. In more severe cases, dehydration or hypokalemia may occur, which can lead to cardiac or neuromuscular dysfunctions, especially in case of concomitant treatment with cardiac glycosides, diuretics or corticosteroids.
If episodes of constipation recur, a doctor should be consulted.
Storage
Store tightly closed, in a cool place, away from heat sources and protected from light.
Shelf life when unopened: 36 months.
Shelf life after opening: 45 days.
