Liquid Paraffin
Sella
Lubricating oily laxative
Description
A medical device indicated for occasional constipation, for those who cannot strain to pass faeces, and after abdominal surgery to prevent the formation of particularly hard faeces which could cause difficulty in defecation with consequent excessive and potentially harmful abdominal straining.
Recommended when softer faeces and faster transit through the intestinal loops are needed, or in the presence of diverticula.
Sella liquid paraffin coats the faecal matter and creates a lipid film along the intestinal walls, slowing down the physiological absorption of water. The water not absorbed by the intestine helps to soften the faeces. Furthermore, Sella liquid paraffin lubricates the faeces, facilitating their passage through the intestine, without irritating the mucous membrane.
Instructions for use
- From 6 to 11 years: 2-3 teaspoons per day, in a single dose.
- From 12 years: 2-3 tablespoons per day, in a single dose.
Take the product during or after meals, preferably in the evening at least one hour before going to bed.
Ingredients
Liquid paraffin oil.
Warnings
Products with a laxative effect should be used as infrequently as possible and for no more than seven days.
Not recommended for children under 6 years of age.
A diet rich in liquids promotes the effect of the product.
Keep out of the reach and sight of children.
Should undesirable effects occur, treatment must be suspended and a doctor informed.
Do not use the medical device if, upon first opening, the package appears damaged or not perfectly intact.
Do not use in case of:
- hypersensitivity (allergy) to one of the two components;
- nausea, vomiting, acute or unknown origin abdominal pain;
- intestinal obstruction or stenosis;
- gastrointestinal disorders such as appendicitis, ulcerative colitis, rectal bleeding of unknown origin;
- pregnancy or during breastfeeding;
- acute haemorrhoidal crisis with pain and bleeding;
- severe dehydration;
- subjects with difficulty swallowing or who have pathologies (e.g. hiatal hernia) or conditions (e.g. debilitated bedridden subjects) that involve a risk of regurgitation;
- colostomy/ileostomy;
- concomitant intake of other laxatives or stool softeners.
Possible side effects:
Metabolic and nutritional disorders.
Liquid paraffin can interfere with the absorption of fat-soluble substances, such as vitamins A, D, E, K, especially after prolonged use of the product.
Isolated cramp-like pains or abdominal colic, more frequent in cases of severe constipation.
Rectal dripping (leakage, dribbling) of paraffin with consequent anal irritation and itching, rectal bleeding, especially after prolonged use of the product.
Lipoid pneumonia and oil embolism, due to accidental inhalation of the product.
Overdose and abuse:
Abuse of preparations with a laxative effect (frequent or prolonged use or with excessive doses) can cause abdominal pain, persistent diarrhoea with consequent loss of water, mineral salts (especially potassium) and other essential nutrients. Fluid and electrolyte losses must be replaced.
Electrolyte imbalances are characterized by the following symptoms: thirst, vomiting, weakness, edema, bone pain (osteomalacia) and hypoalbuminemia. In the most severe cases, dehydration or hypokalemia may occur, which can lead to cardiac or neuromuscular dysfunctions, especially in the case of concomitant treatment with cardiac glycosides, diuretics or corticosteroids.
If episodes of constipation recur, a doctor should be consulted.
Storage
Store tightly closed, in a cool place, away from heat sources and protected from light.
Shelf life of unopened packaging: 36 months.
Shelf life after opening: 45 days.
Format
500 ml bottle.
