Chlorhexidine gluconate

What it is and what it is used for
CORSODYL contains the active ingredient chlorhexidine gluconate, which belongs to the class of medicines with anti-infective and antiseptic activity. CORSODYL prevents and combats local oral infections, in particular it has:
• a disinfectant action in the oral cavity, also before and after tooth extractions or minor surgeries;
• an anti-plaque action, helping to prevent inflammation of the gums (gingivitis) or the supporting tissues of the teeth (periodontitis), due to plaque formation;
• a protective action against infections in wearers of fixed or removable prostheses, thanks to its antiseptic activity on teeth and gums.

Consult your doctor if you do not feel better or if you feel worse after a short period of treatment.

What you need to know before taking this medicine
Do not use CORSODYL
- If you are allergic to chlorhexidine gluconate or any of the other ingredients of this medicine (listed in paragraph 6).

Warnings and precautions
• Do not swallow CORSODYL, as it is for external oral use only.
• Avoid contact with eyes or ears: if the product comes into contact with eyes or ears, wash immediately with water.
• If you experience pain, swelling or irritation of the mouth, stop treatment and consult your doctor or dentist.
• Temporary taste disturbances and temporary sensations of numbness, tingling or burning of the tongue may occur initially. These effects usually decrease with continued use. If they persist, consult your doctor or dentist.
• Prolonged use of medicines for local use, such as CORSODYL, may cause sensitisation phenomena. In this case, stop treatment and consult your doctor.
• If a rash, swelling of the lips, tongue, throat or face, or difficulty breathing occurs, discontinue use of the product and consult a doctor immediately. These effects could be signs of a rare and serious allergic reaction (see also paragraph 4 Possible side effects). Consult your doctor even if you have experienced such disorders in the past.
• Chlorhexidine gluconate can cause superficial staining of the tongue, teeth and some materials used for fillings and prostheses. Stains are not permanent and can be largely prevented by reducing the consumption of foods or drinks that can stain, such as tea, coffee and red wine.
Staining of teeth and orthodontic appliances can be prevented by daily use of a common toothpaste. Since chlorhexidine gluconate is incompatible with some detergents (anionic compounds, such as sodium lauryl sulfate) generally present in common toothpastes, use toothpaste before CORSODYL, rinse your mouth with water and wait 5 minutes before using CORSODYL, or use toothpaste at another time of day, away from the use of CORSODYL.
In some cases, you may remove the staining by contacting your dentist for a professional cleaning.
In the case of prostheses and anterior fillings that have fissures and/or rough surfaces, the staining may remain even after a professional cleaning.
A professional cleaning may also be necessary following treatments (such as jaw fixation or application of orthodontic appliances) that have not allowed normal mechanical oral hygiene (e.g., brushing).

Possible side effects
Like all medicines, this medicine can cause side effects, although not everyone gets them.
The side effects observed are generally mild and localised.

Data from clinical studies
Very common side effects (may affect more than 1 in 10 people):
coated tongue.
Common side effects (may affect up to 1 in 10 people):
dry mouth, loss/alteration of taste, tongue pain, sensation of numbness/decreased sensitivity of the oral cavity.

Post-marketing data
Frequency unknown (frequency cannot be estimated from the available data):
severe allergic reactions (including anaphylaxis), manifesting as rash, swelling of the lips, tongue, throat or face, or difficulty breathing (see paragraph 2 Warnings and precautions). If these side effects occur, stop treatment and contact your doctor immediately.
Superficial staining of the tongue and teeth (see paragraph 2 Warnings and precautions), pain/irritation of the mouth, desquamation/pain/swelling of the oral mucosa (see paragraph 2 Warnings and precautions), swelling of the glands located behind the jaw (parotid glands).

These side effects are generally temporary. Adherence to the instructions in the leaflet reduces the risk of side effects.
