Rinocidina 7.5 mg + 3 mg nasal drops, solution
Naphazoline nitrate + tyrothricin
What it is and what it is used for
Rinocidina is a medicine containing naphazoline nitrate (a decongestant for the nasal mucosa) and tyrothricin (an antibiotic effective in the local treatment of nasal infections).
This medicine is used in the topical treatment of bacterial inflammation of the nasal mucosa (rhinitis) and paranasal cavities (sinusitis).
Consult your doctor if you do not feel better or feel worse after 7 days.
What you need to know before taking the medicine
Do not use Rinocidina
- if you are allergic (hypersensitive) to naphazoline nitrate, tyrothricin, similar substances or any of the other ingredients of this medicine (listed in paragraph 6);
- if you suffer from heart disease;
- if your blood pressure in the arteries is very high (severe arterial hypertension);
- if you have a disease due to high pressure inside the eye called glaucoma;
- if you suffer from an overactive thyroid gland (hyperthyroidism);
- if you are taking certain medicines to treat depression called Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors (MAOIs);
- if you have stopped therapy with certain medicines to treat depression called Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors (MAOIs) less than two weeks ago;
- in children under 12 years of age.
Warnings and precautions
Consult your doctor or pharmacist before using Rinocidina
- if you are elderly and/or your prostate volume is increased (prostatic hypertrophy), because your urine could be retained in your bladder (urinary retention).
- if you suffer from heart disease, especially in case of high blood pressure (hypertension), the use of the medicine will be evaluated by your doctor on a case-by-case basis
- if sudden symptoms appear such as: severe headache, nausea, vomiting, vision disturbances. The doctor may decide to discontinue therapy. In most cases, such symptoms improve or resolve within a few days following appropriate treatment.
- in case of loss of smell
The use, especially if prolonged, of products applied directly to the affected area (topical products) can lead to sensitization phenomena; in this case, treatment must be interrupted and, if necessary, the doctor consulted, who must establish appropriate therapy.
Prolonged use of vasoconstrictors (a category of medicines to which Rinocidina belongs) can alter the normal function of the nasal and paranasal sinus mucosa, also inducing habituation to the medicine. The use of the medicine for long periods of time can be harmful.
Children and Adolescents
RINOCIDINA is contraindicated in children under 12 years of age (see paragraph Do not use Rinocidina).
Possible side effects
Like all medicines, this medicine can cause side effects, although not everyone experiences them.
The medicine can cause a worsening of the sensation of nasal obstruction, irritation and swelling of the blood vessels of the inner nasal wall (rebound phenomena of sensitization and mucosal congestion). The rapid absorption of the medicine through the inflamed inner walls of the nose (mucosae) can lead to the following effects involving the entire body (systemic):
• an increase in blood pressure in the arteries (arterial hypertension); an excessive slowing of the heart rate (reflex bradycardia)
• headache
• urinary problems (micturition disorders)
