What it is and what it is used for
ALTERGEN is a medicine that contains two active ingredients: hyaluronic acid and silver sulfadiazine.
Hyaluronic acid is a very important element for the human body: it is naturally present, for example, in the skin, eyes, and cartilage, and it accelerates the wound healing process.
Silver sulfadiazine is an antibiotic belonging to the sulfonamide class, drugs that kill certain types of germs, providing protection against infections caused by them.

ALTERGEN is used to treat skin lesions such as sores, wounds due to impaired blood circulation (varicose ulcers), or burns.

Consult your doctor if you do not notice improvements or if you notice a worsening of symptoms after a short period of treatment.

What you need to know before taking the medicine
Do not use ALTERGEN:
• if you are allergic to silver sulfadiazine or any of the other ingredients of this medicine (listed in section 6);
• during pregnancy and breastfeeding unless specifically advised by your doctor;
• in premature infants and newborns in the first months of life.

Warnings and precautions
Consult your doctor or pharmacist before using ALTERGEN if:
• you have had allergic reactions after taking antibiotics belonging to the sulfonamide class;
• you have kidney problems (kidney failure) or liver problems (liver failure).

If you use ALTERGEN for a long time and/or over extensive parts of the body, your doctor may advise you to have blood tests to assess your white blood cell count.

Possible side effects
Like all medicines, this medicine can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them.

The following systemic side effects have been reported with oral sulfonamides:
• more or less sudden appearance of skin lesions, e.g., spotted or diffuse color changes (skin rashes);
• kidney problems (kidney failure);
• liver inflammation (toxic hepatitis);
• blood disorders such as a decrease in certain types of white blood cells (agranulocytosis, leukopenia) or platelets (thrombocytopenia).

It is unlikely that these side effects will occur with the use of ALTERGEN, as ALTERGEN is applied directly to the affected area. However, if you use ALTERGEN on large skin areas and/or for a very long period, these effects may still occur.
